What? 4 bathrooms? Yes! by Miriam Pia

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006
At first glance one can easily see that there is an abundance of $500,00-$1Million homes in Greater Atlanta.  Upon closer inspection, however, there is a most notable major difference between those built decades ago and those created more recently.

It is as simple as privacy.  One sign of wealth, they say, at times is having ‘personal space’.  While being left alone, or suffering from others being too afraid to be friendly is dreadful having one’s own chambers is grand.  Here’s the very key, and this one is sadly even more common is re-built families where the normal intimacies have been strained.  Every child or other member of the household who has their own bedroom also gets a private bathroom.  Okay, perhaps its servants quarters, or just the children.

If you’ve been suffering from too much “I need to pee” while taking a bath; this could be the solution that you’re seeking. “Just go use your own bathroom; thank you!”

New Homes in the Southwestern Quarter of Atlanta: Spacious! by Miriam Pia

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

Amongst the many new homes under construction in Greater Atlanta are houses in the Glenmore. This area is so new, that the houses aren’t even finished yet! The community however, is already in development. In this pedestrian friendly area you will find delights for sophisticated people. There is a tennis court and a golf club. Ahh, yes, in this area you will even find a local symphony.

Just to clue you in further: the local public elementary school is Evoline West; the middle school is Bear Creek and the local public high school is named Creekside.

It’s an easy commute to downtown and also to the local International airport. So, for those who have travel as part of their job; this is a great location.

What about the houses themselves? “Ahh,” you’re going to like this! Two story foyers, for starters. Now that is good, isn’t it? Each home is along the lines of 4 and 5 bedrooms so there’s plenty of space for the whole family as well as a home office if need be. Of course you can find a full livingroom and dining room. Best of all, especially for couples who both work or for large families: two and a half bathrooms. What a relief! No morning squabbles, and no lines of desperate relatives banging on your bathroom door.

Unexpected Designs in Midtown

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Most of us have preconceived notions. We normally do not even notice them until we happen along something that turns out to be quite different. At times, this may lead us to feeling rather shocked. In other cases our first reaction may be anger.Home design is one such area. Don’t get me wrong; I am not trying to tell you that I think you are terribly narrow minded. It isn’t that. However, as you set out on your search for homes you may well be looking for something that conforms to a pre-set notion. This is fine when you know what you want.

However, one fun approach may be to keep an open mind for designs that you had not predicted, but that, as it turns out, you like. One example that I found was a set of rental apartments. The whole building of four goes for less than $500,000. What pleasantly surprised me was that although each is only a one bedroom, it nevertheless has a spacious feeling. The front is large and open with full livingroom and dining room. I am not sure why, but this took me for a loop. That may not be what this does to you, but I’m sure that there’s a home design out there you may well love which has the same effect on you that this had on me.

The Current Housing Market & Bonus by Miriam Pia

Friday, April 7th, 2006

Over all, the current housing market in Atlanta, Georgia is great.  There is a steady influx of the population.  The market is so good in fact, that whether it is a buyer’s or seller’s market depends solely on the part of town that you are in on any given day.

There is a new development in the works to improve the quality of life in Georgia.  It is to add a system of commuter trains.  This way, it will make Atlanta more accessible to outlying areas without devastating the city nor the other counties with excessive roads or vehicular traffic.

College Park of Greater Atlanta

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Welcome back.  We have touched on the College Park area before, but we need to do so again.  College Park was originally it’s own city, but it is within the Highway Loop of Greater Atlanta.

This area still has its own municipal government.  Not only that it has one the largest historic districts in all of Georgia.  Obviously, if you like the classy feel of old homes, this may well be the best choice for you.

Along with the beauty of well loved and restored homes built in the 1800′s when the city was founded, you also get a community that loves to really get out there with Southern Hospitality.  If you are a native Southerner, this may simply feel ‘normal’.

However, if you are moving to move into  the region, College Park can offer you a great deal of charm.  The city is located fairly near to the International airport, and commutes into Atlanta proper are short.

Mid Range Homes in Atlanta by Miriam Pia

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Welcome to Atlanta Real Estate!  Today is another beautiful day.  In this article we’re going to have a look at what’s available in the next ‘price level up’.  For starters, lets look at two very different homes around the $400,000 level.  Both of these have been around for a few decades.  Both are located within subdivisions.  Both have three bedrooms.

One of them, is a large white house with a very open, green lot.  It has charm, expansiveness and an overall good feel.  It could be someone’s country manor, or perhaps part of an impressive urbane street.  Not regal, but classy and relaxed, this house is potent yet low key.

The other one is a hideaway dream come true!  Fed up with the urban feeling?  You’ll adore this place!  Sure enough it is nestled in amongst trees who are blissfully mature; they must be at least 50.  The house itself is beautiful.  However, this one is ideal for walking around the house nude with the windows open and knowing you will not be exposed to your neighbors.  All this charm right in town, for about $425,000.

A Few Facts About Greater Atlanta by Miriam Pia

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

You may have noticed by now that not all cities are run the same way.  Atlanta has a Mayor and a City Council.  At the moment, the Mayor is a woman named Shirley Franklin.  The City Council has 15 members, including a President.  If you take a look at the photos you’ll see that the council is multi-racial and also goes across gender lines.  It is nice to know that at high levels of the local government at least, there really is diversity amongst the leadership.

Right now, the City Council President is also a woman.  Her name is Lisa Borders.  She is a Judge.  She has 14 cohorts.

While it is true, that the majority of people don’t usually actively participate in the local political debates, its nice to know where to go when you have a bone to pick, or if you want to have your say in local politics.

Tomorrow we’ll have another look at homes.

Other Features of Dekalb County

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

Well, after Hurricane Katrina there’s no doubt of one thing.  The thought of property damage has crossed your mind.  Storm damage, and other weather damage is a legitimate concern.  How severe your anxiety is may depend a great deal upon the situation that faces you.

When you shop for a home, one characteristic you will want to watch out for is what types of risk the building will face.  Is there the potential for flood damage? Fire hazards?  Mind you, in Dekalb county you don’t have a forest fire risk, but you might face flooding.

Before you buy, make sure you find out whether your property is in or near a flood plain.  Remember to, the more buildings that are put up close to a natural river, the further out the flood plain will be.

If you buy in a flood plain will you need extra insurance.  Right now, the county has a special policy allowing owners to sell off property that is virtually guaranteed to flood.
