Although Marietta is home to more than 58,000 residents, this community northwest of Atlanta still offers a small-town Southern atmosphere. During the Civil War, the town was occupied by Union troops until they joined Sherman’s march to the sea in 1864. After the war, Marietta prospered. Today the city’s neighborhoods feature antebellum and Victorian homes, modest bungalows, and ranch-style houses. The town square is a cultural area complete with shops, historic buildings, an art museum and the Theatre in the Square.
Marietta has grown greatly in the past 30 years. Residents enjoy restaurants, shopping, affordable housing and easy accessibility to Downtown Atlanta, which is 20 miles away. The city is located near the Cumberland, Galleria and Town Center malls, and local roads provide access to Highways 75, 20 and 285.
A traditional city, residents recently gained notoriety for their "pro-family" resolutions that denounce alternative lifestyles. "The Big Chicken" is a local landmark, and five neighborhoods and several buildings are on the National Historic Register. The city is located near scenic Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield and Park, and veterans from all U.S. conflicts since the Civil War are buried in the downtown National Cemetery -- the only national cemetery in metro Atlanta.
An award-winning school system offers students a quality education. Marietta is a frequent winner of state, regional and national awards, and it has been designated as a City of Excellence and City of Ethics by the Georgia Municipal Association.
